ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the timeliness and context of human factors research in counter-terrorism by revisiting a number of themes identified a decade ago and updating the research base based on recent findings. Specific attention is given to surveillance (e.g. traditional CCTV and semi- or full-automation solutions), mass transit hubs (e.g. aviation security), emergency responders (e.g. teamworking and issues of vulnerability) and virtual reality (e.g. developing scenarios to support training). From this a systems approach is offered as a way to understand the complex interactions and wider systems thinking behind the process of security from the viewpoint of those who try to uphold it (e.g. security staff), those who use it (the wellbeing and positive experiences of the general public) and those who aim to undermine it (e.g. the terrorists).
