ABSTRACT

A human understands that Susan Rice in the sentence “Susan Rice opposed the UN veto to condemn Syria” is a person. However, an automated coding scheme using a location database would tag Susan as a reference to As Susan, an area within the Aleppo Governorate of Syria. When developers at Social Science Automation (SSA) added the open source location database GeoNames to the automated coding scheme Behavior and Events from News (BEN) human names doubling as locations and several other issues required resolutions before BEN events could receive location identification.
