ABSTRACT
The role of standardized, practical patient classifications in medicine is becoming increasingly important. This applies not only to billing systems but also increasingly to the standardized description of the clinical case for treatment purposes. The specific circumstances that play a role in the treatment of ALS patients (patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) require a broad and multidimensional description. Analyses to find an appropriate classification for this purpose have preceded the development work. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF, (WHO, 2006)) was identified as most suitable for this purpose. The ICF includes more than 1,400 categories assessment schemes, which makes dealing with this classification very difficult. The main issue with the development work presented here was the following: How can the knowledge, which is based on the ICF, be made accessible in an easy and intuitive manner? And how can this accessible knowledge be applied in practice? The EditPatient Approach presented here uses web technologies such as sensitive search, word suggestions and the possibilities of visualization to make the ICF classification applicable to a wide group of users. The creation of templates simplifies the reusability of relevant categories and a sharing feature links the various treatment partners.
