ABSTRACT

Nurses and sterile processing technicians working in a gastroenterology clinic at a major health system in the USA have reported musculoskeletal disorder injuries related to computer workstations, patient handling, sterile processing, and the physical environment. Ergonomic evaluations were conducted due to requests from the nurse manager and employee health. Ergonomic stressors were identified. The design of the tools and the physical environment were contributing factors to some of the identified stressors. Administrative and engineering solutions were recommended to reduce musculoskeletal injuries and to increase patient and staff safety. The engineering solutions included adjustable wall-mounted and mobile computer workstations; various patient handling devices; sit-stand seating and step stools; and other low-tech solutions in sterile processing. Recommended administrative solutions included the rotation of job duties and staff training.
