ABSTRACT

Nowadays, the high crash involvement of the increasing young novice drivers has become a great concern in China. This study aims to investigate the potential factors influencing young novice drivers and also how these factors affect their driving behavior through simulated driving experiment. Both a Driver Behavior Questionnaire (DBQ) and a simulated driving experiment were conducted in 73 Chinese young novice drivers. Unsafe driving behavior was defined by the DBQ, including errors, lapses, ordinary violations and aggressive violations. The effects of driving potential, objective characteristics and subjective characteristics on young novice drivers’ unsafe driving behavior were evaluated based on the simulated driving platform. The results show that subjective characteristics have the greatest impact on young novice drivers’ unsafe driving behavior. The findings provide further reference for young novice drivers’ driving safety study and driving training design in simulated driving environment.
