ABSTRACT

Significant research and development in Europe in recent years has been focused on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). Many ITS functions are available on portable navigators and Smartphones and their market penetration is increasing considerably. Nevertheless no standards directly related to the use of Aftermarket and Nomadic Devices in vehicles exist and there is little published knowledge about their impact on the driver behavior. Field Operational Trials (FOTs) being undertaken within Europe, funded under the EU TeleFOT project, are assessing the impact that such devices have focusing upon 4 domains; Safety, Mobility, Efficiency and the Environment. User uptake and acceptance is also being considered. This paper describes the UK FOTs and presents examples of analyses using the different data sources available at the time of writing.
