ABSTRACT

This paper describes an experiment with airline pilots in an integrated air traffic control and flight simulator facility, examining a range of factors impacting pilot interaction with TCAS. Through arrivals and approach-intercept, pilots experienced a range of factors experienced in realistic operations, including situations where the controller does and does not call out the traffic, where the traffic flow is and is not being executed properly by the traffic, and a range of relative trajectories to the target. Intruder trajectories were purposefully designed to establish a range of resolution advisories at varying points throughout the flights.
