ABSTRACT

Non-auditory effects of noise is defined as ‘all those effects on health and wellbeing caused by exposure to noise, with the exclusion of effects on the hearing organ and the effects due to the masking of auditory information (Smith, 1992). The study primarily aims to obtain information on the perceptions on road traffic noise and subjective non-auditory responses of traffic enforcers who are exposed to a time weighted average noise of 85 decibels along a main highway in Metro Manila, Philippines. In analyzing the data, correlation tests were performed to determine possible interrelationships between demographic variables age, number of years worked, annoyance level, and the potential non-auditory effects of noise sleep, weariness, stress, irritability and depression which were used suggesting recommendations on how the working conditions of the enforcers can be improved. Correlation coefficients suggest that age is significantly associated with level of annoyance and level of annoyance is significantly associated with irritability.
