ABSTRACT

Even though researchers in the fields of sociology, psychology, and marketing have widely studied the concept of value itself for decades, the user value of products and services have recently begun to receive attention from researchers in the fields of human-computer interaction (HCI) and user experience (UX). Individuals can pursue several value elements at the same time. However, only parts of those value elements could be satisfied by a certain product or service. For example, a smartphone, no matter how many smart functions it has, would fail to meet one’s need for salvation. The purpose of this study is to reveal the value elements that would be met by smartphone use. To achieve this, value elements were collected and merged to cover the spectrum of universal value. Then, the revised Day Reconstruction Method (DRM), one of the most frequently used methods for a longitudinal observation, was applied to collect the experiences of smartphone users. After analyzing how smartphone experiences can help to satisfy values, fifteen smartphone user value elements such as convenience and pleasure were extracted. The results of this study can help designers to evaluate their alternatives by using it as a checklist. Further study might develop concrete and reliable measurements to evaluate one’s value elements.
