ABSTRACT

A Japanese paper that is made in Saijo city is called “Saijo Japanese paper”, which is one of traditional crafts in Japan. One of the main characteristics of the Saijo Japanese paper is a crape structure. This crape structure is called “Shibo”. The Shibo structure is made by craftsmen’s hand. The Shibo is fabricated by bending from the edge of Saijo Japanese paper toward front. Structure of Shibo affect by bending angle. Recent years, the demand of Saijo Japanese paper is stagnant. Saijo Japanese paper requires creating new products. However, it is not clear whether the preference of what kind of the Saijo Japanese paper is high. On the other hand, structure of Shibo on Saijo Japanese paper can change easily. We can prepare many 472types Shibo structure. In this study, the Shibo structures of the Saijo Japanese paper with various making condition were quantified. Further, preference of the Saijo Japanese paper with various Shibo structure were clarified.

In this study, 6 types Shibo structure Saijyo Japanese paper was prepared. One was made by non-expert. The other was made by expert (career of 18 years) with different technique. Shibo structures of 6 Saijyo Japanese paper were measured by using non-contact three-dimensional measuring device (NH-3SP; Mitaka Kohki Co., Ltd.). The cross section was measured with 100 μm Measuring pitch and 50 mm measurement range. The questionnaire of Saijyo-Japanese paper was performed for Japanese and Chinese. Structure measurement results confirmed that sample of usual fabrication by expert had the height of the highest Shibo, and the width of the narrowest Shibo. Subjective evaluation results provided that tendencies of the evaluation to the Saijo Japanese paper of Japanese and Chinese people do not differ greatly.
