ABSTRACT

Over the years the weight of the child population has increased alarmingly, and this can be observed in a survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), U.S., where it shows that this population has tripled in 30 years, until 2008 . In Brazil, the data presented by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), show the growing obesity, where between 1974 and 1975, 2.9% of boys and 1.8% of girls aged 5-9 years were obese, as in 2008, these numbers

increase to 16.6% of boys and 11.8% of girls the same age. In the U.S., can also be noted that rising obesity, the CDC reported that there was an increase of 6.5% in 1980 to 19.6% in 2008 among children aged 6-11. (IBGE 2010, CDC, 2010).
