ABSTRACT
Among early gnathostomes the Placodermi are presently recognised as the most successful and diverse group during the Devonian period. Nevertheless they have long been considered as oddities among piscine vertebrates since they exhibit a number of autapomorphies which distinguish them from all other gnathostomes of the time (acanthodians, chondrichthyans, actinopterygians, sarcopterygians).
