ABSTRACT
This chapter complements Chapter 1 and subsequent chapters that have defined and detailed macroergonomics as a discipline or subdiscipline of ergonomics. It also follows Chapter 5’s treatment of various methodological approaches. Specifically, we demonstrate through several examples that empirical research that is distinct from related disciplines can, and should, be conducted to further develop our knowledge of work systems. This knowledge should lead to better design and improvement of work systems.
