ABSTRACT

The use of small visual displays (SVDs) embedded in electronic devices presents a growing usability issue for the 25 million adult Americans with vision loss. This paper provides an overview of the usability barriers presented by SVDs for the expanding demographic of people with vision loss. Efforts to improve usability include the development of the American Foundation for the Blind’s Optics Lab to measure SVD optical parameters, and research conducted in partnership with the Atlanta VA Rehabilitation R&D Center of Excellence to test the effectiveness of an SVD research-based guideline to predict SVD character recognition by people with vision loss.
