ABSTRACT

This paper discusses the use of Ergonomics and of Design as tools to preserve the physical and mental integrity of workers. As a case study, an industry in the Northeast of Brazil was investigated, in which activities are undertaken that involve various risks to do with fires and explosions. The behavioral intentions of employees in simulated emergency escape situations were investigated. Evidence was found of the importance of an interdisciplinary approach when risks are being managed as an alternative to avoid accidents, thus promoting safety in industrial plants.
