ABSTRACT

The Korean average life span is increasing due to the growth of economy and the improvement of quality of life. So, Korea is rapidly approaching to the aging society. In addition, the age of core industrial workers has been changed from 20s to 40s, and also advanced-age workers are increasing in industrial field every year.

However, Korea does not have a sufficient interest about the advanced-age workers, yet. And there is no definition of advanced-age worker. And so, first of all, it is needed to define the advanced-age worker.

Usually, aged person could be defined the person whose age is over 60 or 65 years. However, the National Pensions Act provides that the requirement of old-age pension is over the age of 60 years. And the Elderly Welfare Act & the Magna Charta provide that the senior citizen is over the age of 65 years. And the Aged Employment Promotion Act defines that the senior citizen is over the age of 55 years. Considering these facts, in this thesis, it is defined that the advanced-age workers is over the age of 55 years.

The results of statistical analysis of industrial accidents of advanced-age workers are as follows: In 2007 the number of industrial accidents of advanced-age workers is 19,133 that is 21.22% of whole industrial accidents. And in 2008 the number of industrial accidents of advanced-age workers is 21,083 that is 22.00% of whole industrial accidents. And in 2009 the number of industrial accidents of advanced-age workers is 24,996 that is 25.55% of whole industrial accidents. And in 2010 the number of industrial accidents of advanced-age workers is 26,622 that is 26.98% of whole industrial accidents. It shows that the number of industrial accidents of advanced-age workers is increasing continuously.

66Physical characteristics of advanced-age workers are as follows: Endurable power of advanced-age workers is 86% of the 30s. And quickness ability of advanced-age workers is 80% of the 30s. And instantaneous reacting ability of advanced-age workers is 68% of the 30s. And muscular strength of advanced-age workers is 18% of the 30s. Because of these characteristics, advanced-age worker is easier to get the industrial accidents in comparison with younger workers.

Types of industrial accidents of advanced-age workers are as follows: The upset is important accident because of the physical characteristics of advanced-age worker.

In addition, the characteristics of industrial accidents of advanced-age workers appear in part of the loss day. The average loss day increases corresponding with the ages. The average loss day of major industrial accidents are as follow: In case of occupational disease, the average loss day has been sharply increased corresponding with the ages. And accident aftereffects of advanced-age workers are prolonged to longer term, especially, in case of electric shock accident, traffic accident, fall accident, etc.

So, in this thesis, it is analyzed the characteristics of industrial accidents of advanced-age workers and found out the problems about the safety management for the advanced-age workers. As a result, it is presented the improving measures of the safety management for the advanced-age workers.
