ABSTRACT

Rice is a good source of nutrition and a staple food for hundreds of millions of people around the world. The estimated share of total calories obtained from rice is 21% globally, 29% in lowincome countries, and 32% in Asia (Wailes 2005). The world’s total production of rice in 2009 reached 682 million t, 80% of which came from some Asian countries (i.e. PR of China 29%, India 20%, Indonesia 9%, Bangladesh 7%, Vietnam 6%, Myanmar 5%, and Thailand 5%) (FAO 2010), where arsenic (As) pollution is widespread.
