ABSTRACT

The land owner initially set out to stabilise the estimated 40,000 m3 of calcined sands at the site to prevent further erosion, as there had been complaints of excessive dust from local residents. The initial works included hydro-mulching and realignment of drainage across the site, both of which proved to be effective in the exceptionally wet conditions experienced in 2010. The intentions however were to identify a longer term solution for the site and during 2010/11 a series of studies were initiated to identify suitable options. As the site is one of many similar sites controlled by other local and State Government authorities as well as private enterprises throughout the Victorian goldfields, solutions developed for the site had to be pragmatic and transferable to other, similar sites without imposing a significant financial burden to the community.
