ABSTRACT

Two of our study areas, viz. Debagram and Chakdaha were situated within the Upper Delta Plain (i.e. Bhagirathi-Hooghly alluvial plain), of which, Debagram was located ∼10 km east of the major meander belt of Bhagirathi-Hooghly river, while Chakdaha was located beside the recent meander and the present river channel of the Bhagirathi-Hooghly river. The other study area, Baruipur was located at the delta front and in closer proximity to the Bay of Bengal in the south.
