ABSTRACT
Pollution is the disturbance of the Earth’s life-support systems, most critically those that recondition land, air and water resources. The most publicized of pollution incidents affect the atmosphere or surface waters. However, the subsurface environment is also prone to pollution, particularly of its groundwater. Contamination here is slower to spread but slower to remedy than that influenced by the more rapid processes on the Earth’s surface.
