ABSTRACT

Bentham (1834) recognized three genera: Amaracus, Majorana and Origanum but later (1848) he returned to the Linnaean concept and described within Origanum four sections: Amaracus, Majorana, Origanum and Anatolicon. Briquet (1895) accepted three separate genera (Amaracus, Majorana and Origanum) and described some more sections in the genus Majorana (Schizocalyx, Holocalyx and Chilocalyx). Until recently, both the three genera concept and the one genus concept have been used by taxonomists.
