ABSTRACT
Spatial data can be observed in various forms. A first distinction can be drawn between continuous areal data and discontinuous data. A similar distinction is usually made when dealing with time series data. For example a time series of the stock market prices is essentially a continuous one which can be recorded at any point in time. In contrast, the total level of production in one country can be defined only over intervals of time, as the sum of units produced in that interval.
