ABSTRACT

Participation in domestic life activities is fundamental to survival and lifestyle maintenance, both at an individual level and within family units. Engaging in domestic life activities contributes to social order and integration and is infused with social expectations and standards. In general, adults are expected to be able to perform or oversee the completion of tasks that are determined by one’s assigned roles within the home environment. Each domestic life activity requires a different set of knowledge and abilities to meet the speci„c physical, cognitive, social, and emotional demands of that activity. For example, paying the rent or mortgage on time requires a person to remember the due date, to know how to make the payment, and then to have the ability and resources to act on that knowledge. Depending on the method of payment, different knowledge and skills will be required. Online payments require knowledge and skills to use a computer and access the Internet, whereas paying by postal mail requires the ability to write a check, address and seal the envelope, and get the envelope to the post of„ce. Using an automatic payment system requires that the individual budget and remember to have adequate funds in the account from which the transfer is authorized.
