ABSTRACT

Physical activity can be described as any bodily movement produced by voluntary skeletal muscle contraction that results in a substantially greater expenditure of energy compared to resting levels.1 Physical activity is now recognized as an important lifestyle behavior with meaningful outcomes among individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS). Routine engagement in physical activity might help preserve physical function and prevent the development of secondary conditions in adults with MS. However, those with MS are often sedentary as they face many barriers to engaging in physical activity. Rehabilitation professionals are in an ideal position to provide support in overcoming barriers to engaging in physical activity. There are „ve learning objectives of this chapter on physical activity and leisure participation among individuals with MS. After reading this chapter, you will be able to:

1. Describe the bene„ts of physical activity and exercise, 2. Identify average levels of physical activity participation, 3. Give examples of facilitators and barriers to participating in physical activity, 4. Understand methods to measure physical activity, and 5. Implement strategies to help increase physical activity.
