ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the development of and the experience with a training simulator for a steel rolling mill. The goal of the training is how to replace the rolls, which is normally controlled by the electronic system, but has to be done in certain exceptional situations by the operators or the maintenance personnel without automatic sequence control. The actual machine is not available for training, since the production is fully automated and is running around the clock. This operator training simulator (OTS) replaces the functionality of the machine in a loop with a replica of the electronic control system (hardware-in-the-loop, HIL). Simulation 440is applied to train the operators and the maintenance staff. To keep the staff well trained without the necessity to interrupt the production routine of the machine was the motivation to develop the simulator.
