ABSTRACT

Data from the Countryside Surveys are being used to monitor changes in Biodiversity Action Plan Broad Habitats in Great Britain. The approach requires detailed data, collected independently of the Broad Habitat programme, to be reclassified into habitats and changes to be identified. In the surveys of 1984, 1990 and 1998 approximately 500 1 km squares were visited and mapped using a flexible coding system. The data held in GIS and databases allows statistical techniques to be used for measuring confidence in allocation and change in Broad Habitats between surveys.
