ABSTRACT

This chapter covers a variety of techniques for communicating with drivers with the aim of assisting them in the driving task. These techniques range from conventional regulatory, warning and information signs, road markings and roadside post delineators, through variable message signs, to in-vehicle systems which are being promoted as part of a comprehensive intelligent transport system (ITS). Although traffic signals might also be considered to be part of these information systems, they are addressed separately (see Chapters 26 and 27) because of their importance.
