When Mexican President Felipe Calderón took oce in December 2006 the country was (and still is) immersed in violence. Just 10 days aer assuming oce, he authorized the direct involvement of the armed forces in what is commonly termed “the war against drugs.” From December 1, 2006 to January 31, 2012 there have been approximately 47,500 deaths associated with the ght against organized crime (elnanciero.com, website)—more casualties than those suered by the US Army from 2003 to 2012 (antiwar.com, www.defense.gov).
