ABSTRACT

As we are taught from an early age, the scientific process includes the following steps: ask a question, perform background research to see whether others have found answers, formulate a hypothesis designed to answer the question, design and conduct an experiment to answer the question, analyze data collected from the experiment, draw conclusions, revise the hypothesis and repeat if necessary. Visual data exploration and analysis, or just visualization, plays a central role in this process: looking at or analyzing data from experiments is a crucial part of the scientific discovery process.
