ABSTRACT

Adherence to a set of core principles will maximize the return on the enormous investments countries around the world will make over the next two decades in electric infrastructure. Smart grid implementation brings many opportunities as well as extraordinary “change management” challenges. Concerns about data privacy in smart gird environments and AMI, in particular, are now being widely discussed. The fundamental issue is organization and prioritization to focus on those first aspects that provide the greatest customer benefit toward the goal of achieving an interoperable and secure smart grid. It is critical that the people find a process that will accelerate the adoption of new smart grid standards. This chapter highlights a few examples of current initiatives for discussion and is not intended to be a comprehensive review. Some regulatory policies penalize utilities for supporting and investing in smart grid technologies. Regulatory policies often do not give credit to utilities for investments that provide substantial societal benefits.
