Correctional services in Australia operate within a complex legislative environment that is governed by independent state government statutes. e majority of criminal law is codi…ed in state government legislation, and although there is a federal criminal law code, it is responsible for the incarceration of a relatively small number of individuals. ere is no federal correctional jurisdiction in Australia. In the state of New South Wales (NSW), the corrections authority, Corrective Services New South Wales (Corrective Services NSW), is part of the Department of Justice and the Attorney General and is headed by a commissioner.
