ABSTRACT

Energy supply is one of the key infrastructures of society. As already pointed out in Chapter 10, this system has to undergo substantial changes in order to increase the overall sustainability of society and economy. In the following sections, we show that including spatial dimensions in the analysis, visioning, and action planning for the restructuring of energy supplies and recognizing the effects spatial structures have on energy ef‚ciency, energy saving, and renewable energy supplies in an integrated spatial and energy planning approach do not only offer new opportunities for the design of energy-optimized spatial structures but also support communities on the local and regional level in the participatory planning of energy landscapes.
