ABSTRACT
It is now generally accepted that where needle biopsy yields a benign diagnosis, and where this is concordant with the imaging appearance, then the woman does not require surgical intervention for screen-detected lesions. If the woman has a symptomatic lump, then a benign needle biopsy diagnosis provides her with the option of avoiding surgical intervention.
