ABSTRACT

Clinical dosimetry relies on a foundation of source calibration. is chapter discusses the framework in which the calibration of brachytherapy sources takes place, with the aim of achieving a high level of accuracy in clinical dose delivery when applying this treatment modality. Precise knowledge of the strength of the source is one of the steps in the dosimetry chain. e dosimetry of brachytherapy sources depends on measurements of the radiation from the source dened in the unit of gray. e quantity for dosimetry is the air kerma, either as in the reference air-kerma rate (RAKR, here the notation KR is used) or the air-kerma strength, SK. e quantity of interest in all radiation therapy is the absorbed dose to water, DW, which is calculated from the quantity air kerma.
