ABSTRACT

Historical accounts of the use of brachytherapy in the treatment of breast cancer begin with the palliation of inoperable breast cancer by Dr. Gocht in 1897 (Gocht 1897). Later, Dr. Georey Keynes pioneered the use of breast brachytherapy for breast conservation with operable breast cancer in the 1920s (Fletcher 1985; Aronowitz 2011). Now, 90 years later, with nearly 1.4 million new cases of breast cancer diagnosed in the world annually (Jemal et al. 2011), brachytherapy plays an important role in the treatment and cure of this disease.
