ABSTRACT

Unlike traditional radionuclide-based brachytherapy sources, electronic brachytherapy utilizes x-rays produced by miniature x-ray tubes using an externally applied electric potential to accelerate electrons and produce bremsstrahlung photons from a high-atomic number target. ese radiation sources have the advantage and the disadvantage of not emitting ionizing radiation when de-energized, in contrast to radionuclide sources that continually emit radiation with exponential decay. It should be noted that regulatory requirements for electronic brachytherapy source handling and management are dierent than those for radionuclide-based brachytherapy sources. In the United States,

the use of electronic brachytherapy devices is regulated by individual states instead of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
