ABSTRACT

This chapter describes various forest monitoring applications including forest fired detection, forest illegal activities detection, habitat monitoring, and glacier monitoring applications, respectively. It discusses some algorithms and techniques for environmental forest monitoring systems. The chapter also discusses Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) modules for environmental forest monitoring applications. It discusses open issues and future work for environmental forest monitoring applications. WSN applications dealing with forest fire detection can play an important role in preserving precious forests from destruction. In addition to forest fire detection, another kind of forest monitoring application is the detection of deforestation and illegal animal hunting. WSNs can provide close and detailed views of plant and animal habitats for researchers. The gateway is responsible for transmitting sensor data from the sensor patch through a local transit network to the remote base station that provides wide area network connectivity and data logging.
