ABSTRACT

Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario, which are joined by fi ve connecting channels, form the largest surface freshwater system in the world. The Province of Ontario and the states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York, all lie along the shores of the Great Lakes. Dependence on the Great Lakes has led to cooperation by the Canadian and American governments on improving and maintaining the quality of their boundary waters.
