ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we first establish why disorders of the basal ganglia frequently lead to balance and gait disturbances. Following general guidelines of a clinical approach to basal ganglia disorders, we sketch the presentation and possible treatments of different types of basal ganglia disorders. This part of the chapter is subdivided into sections, each dealing with different categories of balance and gait disorders, namely hypokinetic-rigid syndromes, dystonia, chorea, tremor, myoclonus and paroxysmal dyskinesias. A separate section deals with isolated balance and gait disorders (i.e. without additional signs of basal ganglia disease).
