The diverse spectrum of symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) reflects dysfunction of widespread regions of the cerebral cortex. Symptoms begin insidiously, making it difficult to date the onset of cognitive and functional decline precisely. Progression is generally gradual, yet can be interleaved with occasional plateaus; however, reliable measurement of disease progression is difficult because of variability between and within subjects.
