ABSTRACT
Tracheostomy should be performed as an elective procedure using the conventional dissection technique. Percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy, now widely used in adults, is not suitable for children because the airway is small and often precarious; the trachea is soft, flexible, and very mobile; landmarks can be difficult to palpate; and a displaced tube cannot be rapidly replaced.
