ABSTRACT

The advancement of fiberoptic technology has led to the development of small caliber pediatric endoscopes. The outer sizes vary between 6 and 12 Fr (Figure 81.2). Infant resectoscopes have an outside diameter of 8.5 Fr. A variety of electrodes can be fitted for both cutting and coagulative procedures. The male neonatal urethra at full term can usually accommodate an 8.5-Fr instrument. The size is often dictated by the caliber of the urethral meatus. Gentle dilation or meatotomy may facilitate the insertion of scopes. The female urethra can, in general, accommodate between two and four Fr sizes larger than the male urethra.
