ABSTRACT
Since the discovery of penicillin in 1928 antimicrobial chemotherapy has evolved into a major area of chemotherapeutics with a huge impact on treatment of patients. In many cases, infections once feared and considered invariably fatal are now managed with minimal morbidity and, in developed countries where antimicrobials and healthcare facilities are easily accessed, with almost negligible mortality rates.
