ABSTRACT

There are various methods by which patients, healthcare staff and visitors can be protected from micro-organisms whilst in wards or outpatient healthcare facilities. A combination of well-designed buildings and the application of standard infection control precautions for all patients will assist in the prevention and control of infection. The application of transmission-based precautions when patients are managed with known infections will support the prevention of healthcare-associated infection. The safe management of wounds and invasive devices will also protect patients from unnecessary infections.
