ABSTRACT

It is vital to know the serious and not so serious causes of red eye and how to identify and manage each one (Box 15.1). In addition, know the differential diagnosis for sudden visual loss and revise the management of all ocular trauma from a simple foreign body to penetrating injuries, globe rupture and chemical eye injury, as all have appeared as SAQs.1 Also, be able to express visual acuity as measured using a typical Emergency Department (ED) Snellen chart − remember 6/9 means that, at best, the subject could read the line marked nine at six metres from the chart.2
