ABSTRACT

For each of the following scenarios, select the most likely underlying platelet disorder. Each option may be used once, more than once or not at all.

1. A 12-year-old boy presents to the GP 2 weeks after contracting chickenpox. He has a non-blanching, palpable, purple rash all over his body and is bleeding from his gums. The full blood count shows a haemoglobin concentration of 14 g/dL, a platelet count of 40 × 109/L and a white cell count of 7 × 109/L. A clotting screen shows a normal PT and a normal APTT.
