ABSTRACT

For each of the following scenarios, select the most likely underlying cause. Each option may be used once, more than once or not at all.

1. A 55-year-old man is admitted with tiredness and worsening shortness of breath. On examination, you note gynaecomastia and a midline sternotomy scar. He is subsequently found to have a normocytic anaemia with a number of red cell fragments on the blood film. Coombs’ test is negative.
