ABSTRACT

Certain conditions are said to be AIDS-defining (or AIDS indicator) illnesses. These are conditions that are strongly suggestive of AIDS. Examples of AIDSdefining illnesses that are suggestive of AIDS without evidence of laboratory HIV infection include Pneumocystis pneumonia, Kaposi’s sarcoma, cytomegalovirus infection, oesophageal candidiasis, cerebral toxoplasmosis and Mycobacterium avium intracellulare infection. Examples of AIDS-defining illnesses that are suggestive of AIDS with laboratory evidence of HIV infection include pulmonary tuberculosis, HIV-wasting syndrome, HIV-related dementia, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and Cryptosporidium diarrhoea lasting longer than 1 month.
