Examples of physical morbidity from alcohol use are vomiting, peptic ulcer disease, Mallory-Weiss tears, oesophageal varices, hepatic cirrhosis and liver failure, pancreatitis, repeated trauma, endocrine disturbances and aspiration pneumonias. Fetal alcohol syndrome is seen in children whose mothers had drunk excessive amounts of alcohol during pregnancy. Features include microcephaly, small nose, low IQ (mean 70), strabismus and a long philtrum.
