Staphylococcus, from Greek staphyle = bunch of grapes + coccus = berry (or round). Staphylococci are round organisms that arrange themselves into clusters resembling bunches of grapes.
Aureus, from Latin aureus = gold. Also gives rise to Au, the chemical symbol for gold.
